I started this newsletter in 2020. Back in Christmas 2020, when Yang Liu—who is no longer involved but remains active elsewhere—and I wrote to our then-600 subscribers, we said, “We hope we have convinced you that Pekingnology is a good-faith, serious newsletter…We sincerely hope Pekingnology contributes to a more nuanced understanding of China - or, in the more official language, help shape 一个真实、立体、全面的中国 a true, multi-dimensional, and panoramic view of China.”
A lot has happened in the past four years, but I am proud that I have managed to keep it going—and now it reaches 17,528 subscribers. I am most proud that I have inspired a growing—albeit still tiny—number of English-language newsletters in China by Chinese mainlanders. At the very least, they now provide more diversified content than what typically comes from within China.
I want to take this opportunity to thank you, our readers, for being part of this journey. I also want to express my gratitude to Yuxuan Jia and our interns, whose contributions have been invaluable in making this possible, and to the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), led by Henry Huiyao Wang and Mabel Lu Miao, for graciously hosting us.
Best Wishes,
Zichen
