My first talk show appearance !
In a dicussion of "No Substitute for Victory" by Matt Pottinger and Mike Gallagher, I joined Yang Liu and Jiang Jiang in EP1 of "Got China".
I’m excited - well, actually very nervous - to share the 1st Episode of Got China, a talk show where Yang Liu, Jiang Jiang, and I talked about No Substitute for Victory: America’s Competition With China Must Be Won, Not Managed and the subsequent What Does America Want From China? Debating Washington’s Strategy—and the Endgame of Competition, both published in Foreign Affairs not long ago.
My intention is the same as when I started this newsletter in 2020, to contribute, to the best of my abilities, my observations and thoughts on China from within China, especially as someone with a background in the Xinhua News Agency at the time.
As I told The Wire China in a long interview published a short while ago, “what I’m most proud of is that after I started writing it, my good friend and former colleague Yang Liu founded the Beijing Channel newsletter, and we also have a very good friend and former colleague called Jiang Jiang and he started the Ginger River Review. [two Substacks founded by Xinhua journalists]” So we three are sort of natural partners in this new project.
I’m also very much aware of the fact that there are very few videotaped serious English-language discussions on China from within China, and let’s not sugarcoat it many of those videos are typically not your cup of tea.
That’s exactly why I’m taking part in the Got China, a product of Xinhua Institute, part of my former employer, where I, in this case, try to contribute some level-headed personal opinions to the often polarized discourse surrounding U.S.-China relations.
Much ink has been spilled over No Substitute for Victory: America’s Competition With China Must Be Won, Not Managed by Mr. Pottinger and Mr. Gallagher, but in my opinion not nearly enough from within China.
In the 1st Episode, we, with some ideas in our heads but never a script in our hands, respectfully delved into the arguments presented in the essay and the subsequent discussion What Does America Want From China? Debating Washington’s Strategy—and the Endgame of Competition from Foreign Affairs with the aim for a more informed and less adversarial discussion.
It’s also my first time to appear in a long-form video so I ask for your forgiveness on our - especially my - amateurism before a camera.
Moving forward, I hope you will continue to engage with the content I took part in producing. Your feedback including criticism are invaluable.
Thank you for your continued support and for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts with you. I look forward to our ongoing dialogue and am confident that my efforts can contribute to a more nuanced and balanced conversation.
The official YouTube channel of Got China is here. And the video here.
The official account on X, previously Twitter, is here. And the tweet containing the video is here.
Let me - us - know what you think!
Congrats!
