A valuable piece, and thank you, Zichen, for securing the English text from Professor Yan. Seeing the Iran war read through moral realism, from Beijing, is exactly why so many of us subscribe. His question is the right one: if geography, regimes and the military balance were constant for decades, what changed?

Moral realism explains the timing well. Perhaps it can also explain the bill, if we stretch it a little. The damage each Gulf state absorbs was largely fixed years ago, by earlier leaders, in steel. Saudi crude can cross the peninsula to Yanbu through the East-West line. Abu Dhabi can pump around Hormuz to Fujairah. Kuwait has no such door, and Qatar's gas cannot be piped around the strait at all.

Those pipelines were leadership decisions once. Now they are geography.

So the two schools may sit closer than they appear. Yesterday's leadership hardens into today's structure, and today's leaders inherit it whether they like the inheritance or not.

Writing from Abu Dhabi, I would add one thing. Security in this neighbourhood has always been measured as much by how many exits you have built as by who your friends are.

You’re ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!

The Iran 🇮🇷 War was STARTED by Netanyahu and Trump because THEY WANTED IT TO!

There was and is NO MORAL JUSTIFICATION for it and there NEVER WILL BE.

IT WAS WRONG and THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES.

Stay PEACEFUL China 🇨🇳 in your dealings with Taiwan 🇹🇼.

REMAIN the GLOBAL EXCEPTION that you are👍🙏💛
